computer locks
You would be surprised where a basic computer lock can be used. It seems like such a simple thing.
People ask me: Who uses a computer lock?
The most common users of computer locks are schools including public and high schools (jk-12), universities, and colleges. But we also have customers that use a computer lock at a nurse work stations in hospitals. There are also many corporate call centers that use computer locks on the desktops computers and workstation.
Don’t these places have lots of other security? Like alarm systems and cameras?
They usually do.. However, most of these facilities have high traffic flow of people or high staff turnover. And all schools have many un-secured exits. Making them perfect candidates for a computer lock.
The alarm systems are a necessary part of protecting a building, however, if a thief tosses a brick through a window and reaches in and grabs a computer, or two, or three… It only takes them seconds to be long gone with the computers. A simple computer lock virtually eliminates this type of theft.
Cameras, you say?
Cameras are a fantastic deterrent. But, they are only useful if the thief is known by the staff or the local police. If they are from another place, or not a common thief, you are left with surveillance footage of a person that can not be recognized!
Also, it does not take much to spray down a camera with a $3 can of spray paint form the local hardware store.
I am not trying to say that theses are useless security measures, only that security is best in layers. And attaching a simple computer lock to the computer and then to the desk may be the most important layer.
When the thief smashes the window, reaches in and grabs the computer and pulls he quickly realizes that its secured down to the desk with a computer lock… He just drops it and runs!
Thieves simply do not invest in the proper tools... Or they don’t know where to steal the proper tools from...
What are the costs of a stolen computer?
1 The computer itself.
2 The lost time and cost of the staff member that sits around waiting for a new computer to arrive and be set up.
3 Lost data… even the best of us don’t back up everything!
4 The time and cost of IT staff getting the new computer in and setting it up
5 The learning curve time of the staff as they may be forced into using new versions of operating systems and application software that they are not used to
The list can go on and on...
All this can be avoided with the use of a simple computer lock.
What is the cost of a computer lock?
$15 to $160
Then there is the case of: “The Ultra Secure Facility”..
(You are going to love this story, names have been omitted to protect the innocent.)
I was called into see a customer’s site as they had regular problems with computers going missing from their in house call centre. They wanted a demo of a computer lock.
I drive up to a 15 foot solid steel gate and buzz the drive up intercom. The voice says “who are you here to see”
I answer.
The voice says “please show your ID to the camera”
I do.
The gate opens and I park my car.
I enter the visitor door and it locks behind me. I then realize that I'm in a locked room about 6 feet by 10 feet with a glass wall facing the security desk. There is a slit for passing ID cards through and a microphone / speaker system. Security asked me for my ID again, I hand them a driver’s license and business card. They swipe my driver’s license and issue me a temporary proximity card and keep my driver’s license until I leave. They also explain to me that I must use the proximity security card at every door and elevator because if I don’t, I will not be able to go back through that door!
I'm thinking to myself “This is almost a secure as a prison!”
Eventually, the IT manager comes down and takes me through 3 points where I need to swipe my proximity security card including an elevator. We walk into the call centre area and he says “This is where the computers are being stolen from”
I almost hit the floor!
Long story short, we installed a $30 computer lock on about 100 workstations.
A few weeks later I made a follow up call to that customer and he said “Thanks! We have not had a single computer stolen since we installed the computer locks”
To sum this all up, a computer lock is the simplest and most cost effective security layer. No business or school should go without them.
